How Camelina Oil Helped Karen's Mare Turn Her Deteriorating Health Around in Just 5 Weeks

16 Dec - David Roberts

I was asked early this spring to try a product called camelina oil I agreed to give it a try. I have a geriatric mare that has been a 3 generation show horse, a 4-H horse a therapeutic riding horse and loved by so many people.

Her health has been slowly deteriorating due to her age. Her condition in April was sad to say the least. Before being put on the oil I had her wormed, then vet checked, overall her muscle mass was deteriorating, she was stiff on her right front shoulder, her skin flaky and coat in a dull unhealthy condition, due to her age and poor teeth condition (floating no longer a option).

Due to her age and poor teeth condition (floating no longer a option).

I started her on the recommended daily dose and after a week with no real results I doubled the dose along with a daily ration of one gallon rolled oats, one gallon beet pulp & Hoffman’s supplements. She remained on that ration for a month , also on summer pasture.

After 2 months there was a noticeable improvement in her stiffness, and condition of hair and skin but no weight gain .

I once again increased the amount of oil with her daily intake and continued till early fall. As of September the mare is showing some weight gain and looking better than she has the last few years.

As of November the mare is going out in winter pasture with shelter, hay and water always available and a daily dose of oil with her ration. Overall I believe this horse has showed improvement in her stiffness, her hair and coat, with minimal weight gain.

I truly believe she would have had to be put down this summer if she didn’t improve.

I will continue to feed this product and will be adding it to my young working stock. I have in the past tried different oil products, without visible results. The camelina oil is very palatable and the long shelf life makes it much more cost effective than other oils .
