5 Tips to Avoid Winter Weight Loss
There's Never Been a Better Time to Start Supplementing Your Horse's Diet with Camelina Oil.
1. Good quality hay makes all the difference
Whether indoors or outdoors make sure you have good quality hay for your horse! As winter falls your horse will have less access to pasture and if hay is scarce consider supplementing their hay requirements. In addition to camelina oil we find that beet pulp or hay cubes are excellent sources of additional fiber!
2. Make sure your horses have access to clean, unfrozen water
Horses prefer water that is not freezing cold and will drink more with access to heated water buckets and troughs. Your horse will thank you for it ;)
3. Make sure they have access to a shelter
The Canadian winters can get quite cold not only for us but also for our horses. If your horse lives out 24/7 make sure they have access to a shelter so they can get out of the wind and snow.
4. Check & monitor your horse's body condition
If you blanket your horse and don’t groom or ride often during the colder months make sure you are checking and monitoring the body condition of your horse under its blankets. Don’t leave them for a month without checking- you could be in for an upsetting surprise!
5. Supplement Your Horse With Balanced Omega3/6 Fatty Acids
Over the winter your horse lacks the same access to pasture as it has during the warmer months. That means your horse is likely lacking the omega 3|6 balance it requires in order to function properly (hay contains very little omegas).
This can lead to potential problems like:
- A poorly functioning immune system.
- Arthritis and inflammation
- Decreased gastrointestinal function
- Inability to add topline and muscle
- Lack of coat sheen and skin health
- Increased stiffness and lameness
- Inability to gain weight or plateauing of weight gain in hard keepers
Camelina Oil Offers What Many Horses Are Lacking Over The Winter Months:
Easily Digestible Omega Fatty Acids
If your horse is fed a typical barn diet of hay and grain it is highly likely it is not receiving the optimal leves of Omega3 fats.
Horses require an ideal fatty acid balance between Omega3 | Omega6 fats and in recent years the potential health benefits of Camelina supplements for animals in the form of oil, seed and meal are being widely researched and acknowledged.
Camelina is rich in Omega3 fatty acids and tocopherols (natural anti-oxidant) in a ratio that is unique among vegetable oils. This unique balance of fatty acid sets it apart from rice bran and flax seed oil, while offering a far superior shelf life and oxidative stability.

When Lori McCumber brought Rory to L & M Equestrian near Waterloo, Ont., the 5-year-old thoroughbred was a starvation case.
But the positive turnaround she has seen in Rory’s overall health in just 30 short days is simply amazing, partly due to adding Camelina oil to the horse’s diet.
Lori has been bringing rescue animals to her boarding and training farm for the past several years, helping them to turn around and then re-homing them. Rory was a real hardship case – extremely undernourished and neglected – so she immediately placed him on good rations with a supplement of Smart Earth Camelina Oil Equine Supplement.
“I had used other Omega oils in the past but this is the most cost effective and does the most,” she said. “Rory is the fastest turnaround of any horse we’ve had – with the most dramatic difference,” she added.
Lori, who has about 40 horses at L & M Equestrian, said Smart Earth’s equine oil seems to have the ideal Omega3-Omega6 balance. “I had used other Omega oils before, the last one was basically a fish oil,” she said. “What we noticed with Rory is his coat is turning out really nice and shiny. He seems to be putting on muscle better – it’s like the oil helps him process the feed better.”
She also noticed an improvement in the composition of Rory’s hooves and his overall demeanor has changed dramatically for the better. “He’s calmed down a lot. He was a little loopy when he got here,” Lori said, adding she now has several other horses on Camelina oil as a supplement and they also are doing well.

We recommend starting your horse on 1oz of camelina oil in their feed per day. As time goes on feel free to increase the dosage until you find the appropriate dosage for your horse.
There really is no comparison between Camelina and Canola/Corn oil. Corn/ Canola oil contains almost all Omega 6's which are pro-inflammatory with minimal Omega 3's. The ratio of Omega 6:3's in Corn oil is 87:1 !!!! Smart Earth Seeds Camelina oil has a Omega 6:3 ratio of 1:1.2-1.6 making it a far superior option for your horse and giving our oil it's fantastic anti-inflammatory properties. While corn/canola oil may seem like a cheaper option it can actually do more harm then good and many vets advise other oils over corn/canola.
Yes! Smart Earth Seeds Equine Camelina oil is highly palatable to even the fussiest of eaters and most horses will readily accept and consume it within the first two feedings. As horse owners ourselves we know that sometimes there are horses that will turn their nose up at just about anything new in their feed. In these cases we suggest starting off with smaller amounts of oil spread out across the grain so the new 'taste' is not concentrated in one spot.

Most horse owners are familiar with the benefits of flax and rice bran in horses diets but these feedstuffs can come with risks such as rancidity and short shelf lives. Flax Oil comes with an Omega 6:3 ratio of 1:4 and Rice Bran oil comes with a ratio of 20.88:1. Smart Earth Seeds Camelina oil has a Omega 6:3 ratio of 1:1.2-1.6 making it the more balanced choice. Omega 6's are pro-inflammatory- if picking between Rice Bran & Flax the obvious choice would be Flax oil. But Flax oil does not offer the balanced ratios that Smart Earth Seeds Camelina oil does. Many end users chose to feed flax seed rather then the pricier flax oil- great caution should be used as horses cannot digest the hard outer shell of flaxseed and flaxseed needs to be ground- once ground however, fatty acids in flax go through rapid degradation causing rancidity. Smart Earth Seeds Camelina oil offers not only a more balanced ratio of Omega 6:3 but also offers stability, a much longer shelf life, and an ease of use that flax simply cannot give you.
