Why Camelina Oil is the Secret to a Healthier & Happier Horse

Joint health, Skin & Coat, Weight Gain, Tail & Mane Quality, & More!

Studies have shown that Omega-3 supplementation (the kind found in Camelina Oil) in a horse's diet could:

✔️ Improve the quality of their sheen, coat, mane & tail

✔️ Decrease joint pain in horses that suffer from arthritis

✔️ Promote healthy weight gain at higher servings

✔️ Improve bone structure

✔️ Help prevent ulcers

✔️ Help with allergic hyperactivity

✔️ Have an anti-inflammatory effect

✔️ Promote better reproductive function

✔️ Help maintain energy and improve mood

Why Your Horse is Almost Certainly Lacking Omega3 Fatty Acids

Today's domesticated horses are very different than the few that remain truly wild.

The way we keep sport and performance horses today limits their access to pasture, which would normally be their source of Omegas.

This, coupled with climate conditions for many horses, means that most horses are lacking the Omega 3s that their bodies require to function properly.

Camelina oil offers what many horses require in a healthy diet: Easily digestible Omega Fatty Acids.

Testimonials

Trish Cowland

Sprout Meadows Enterprises Ltd

"The results have been amazing and we truly believe in this product, our clients are also putting their horses on the oil after seeing the results!

We have an older gelding retired from a show career but arthritic who was getting monthly leg injections, since starting the oil he moves better and is no longer needing costly injections monthly.

One clients mare suffering from severe sweet itch is no longer rubbing and biting her body raw since starting the oil.

All the horses coats glisten and the manes and tails grow quicker than they ever have before!"

Rybecca Panchuk

Rodeo Rider & Smart Earth Customer

"They are an athlete and you have to treat them like an athlete, that's one of the reasons we feed them Camelina.

I feel like they look better with the natural Vitamin E that's in Camelina, they're shinier and more toned. But there's another couple of reasons I like to feed it. One is digestive - stomach health - your health all stems from your gut. Just like humans. We also noticed the difference Camelina makes with their joints. Rodeo is hard on the joints with lots of stopping and starting. It seems to help with longevity and recovery."

"We have 4 horses on this oil. I originally purchased it for a 30+ year old mare to help with her joints and mobility. Then, I shared it with 3 of our other horses because it worked so well on her. She has better mobility and appears to have some of her spunk back! This is Champ and he also has some joint and muscle issues. He seems to have made some improvements in stiffness and his coat is beautiful. One of the other hoses has had an improvement in tail growth and softness. I really like progress I have seen in such a short time."

Lea Ann Korkowski

Smart Earth Customer

"The most obvious thing I've noticed is when I clipped him, his fur and skin became super shiny. Like crushed velvet! Other times he's been clipped, his fur and skin became grey and dusty. Not this time! I am confident that if this oil has helped his fur and skin so significantly, it is also helping him internally!

As I rode past this mirror several times today I continued to admire how super healthy Gus looks now!"

Laura Wetaski

Smart Earth Customer

"I have tried many products over the years to try to help him be healthy, comfortable and happy. He is picky about texture and taste so fish oil omegas didn't work, but he loves camelina oil."

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply a pump?

Unfortunately we don't sell pumps online at this time. We have been referring valued customers such as yourself to Uline for Jug Pumps & Pail Pumps.

How long will a 1 gal jug last me?

That entirely depends on the dose you are feeding. The recommended dose for an average horse is 1 fl oz once or twice daily with feed. So the 1 gal container will last about 128 days if you feed 1 fl oz daily. The 1 gal jug will last the average horse 60+ days if you offer 1 fl oz twice daily.

Why does your label say don't feed this product to pregnant or lactating mares or horses with bleeding issues?

Smart Earth Camelina Oil is approved as an LRVP - a Low Risk Veterinary Supplement for horses and dogs. Our product carries a caution that it should not be used by pregnant or lactating mares or horses with bleeding issues. Despite the fact that there is no evidence camelina oil creates harm or risk to lactating mares or horses with bleeding issues, because there are no long term, documented, studies to the contrary, these risk statements are mandatory.

Is there any clinical research showing that your product works?

There has not been any clinical research on horses fed camelina oil, to our knowledge. However, there are many articles on the health benefits of alpha-linolenic and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in both animals and humans. We do have a research summary of the apparent benefits of adding Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids of the type found in Camelina to the diet of horses. We can send you this research sample on request.

I really want the other benefits your product offers but am concerned as I have seen it predominantly advertised as a weight gain supplement- Can I feed the product without adding weight? What would be your suggested dose?

You absolutely can feed Camelina oil without contributing to weight gain. We would suggest feeding your horse 1 fl oz/day initially and increase/decrease the dosage based on your results.

My horse has Cushings – is it OK to give her Camelina?

We have had many customers who have had great success feeding Smart Earth to horses with Cushings disease. If you are concerned we do advise our customers to consult with their vet before starting supplementation with Camelina Oil.

My horse has laminitis and founder - is your oil safe?

Smart Earth Camelina Oil is laminitis and founder safe. We have a client who swears the only reason her horse survived a founder was because of the oil. It is a safe fat supplement for them and will help reduce inflammation as it’s a natural anti inflammatory.

My horse is currently not sound due to arthritis or other injury - will your product make my horse sound again?

While we cannot guarantee our product will make your horse sound again - it is a natural anti-inflammatory. Many of our clients have seen great success after feeding the product to arthritic horses. We have many regular customers who feed Camelina because of the clearly visible changes in their horses’ mobility.

My horse has a suspected metabolic condition- is it ok to give her Camelina?

We strongly encourage our clients to consult with their veterinarian if they suspect their horse has a metabolic condition. Our product is safe to feed to horses with metabolic conditions and has been a great help for many horses suffering with various metabolic problems.

Does it help with sweet itch?

We have received testimonials from clients who report improvement in horses suffering from severe sweet itch. For example: "My mare is no longer rubbing and biting her body raw since starting the oil." There is one Canadian research study showing that Omega3 fatty acids of the type found in Camelina reduces skin irritations in horses without side effects.

I have miniature horses- is your product safe for miniature horses? What should the dose be?

Our product is absolutely safe for miniature horses. Because they are obviously a lot smaller than what our standard dose is meant to feed we suggest 1/2 fl oz total per day. You can adjust your dosage as you see fit to get the results you are looking for.

Do you have tips on how to introduce the oil to a finicky horse?

We suggest using a very small amount of oil the first time and slowly increase the amount. Make sure it’s evenly dispersed across his feed. You could also try soaking it. If you have any problems with those methods let us know and we can offer some more suggestions.

What's the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in Camelina oil?

Camelina oil is high in ALA with a 2:1 ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s.

Is your camelina organic

We contract our Camelina production to responsible conventional farmers. At present we do not have certified organic growers.

Your label says for long-term storage the product needs to be kepts at 5 degrees C. How long is the oil stable at 20C?

The oil is fine to consume after 2 years at 20C (70F) if unopened and stored in the dark, but not as fresh as it could be. It depends on whether it has been exposed to air and light too. As a general rule we say our oil is fine after 1 year if opened and at room temperature not kept in the dark. The peroxide value is an indication of oxidation stability. Our oil must have a pv of less than 5 when freshly crushed. This value increases as it oxidizes. A pv of >20 is not recommended. We consider long term storage is 2 years at 5C (40F) but at least 5 years if kept frozen. Hope this helps.

Can you feed camelina oil to cats and dogs?

Yes. Dogs love it! Dog dose: 5 mL (1 teaspoon) per 25 lb body weight) once daily. Cats - just a drizzle on their food.

Is it OK for human consumption?

Our non-GMO cold-pressed Camelina oil is approved as a veterinary supplement for horses and for dogs. As a high omega oil it is processed in a food-grade facility and it has been sold to other buyers for human consumption. But we presently are not marketing it as such or selling it in the retail grocery store.

Feeding Instructions

Ideally Camelina Oil is fed as a top dressing on grain. If having palatability issues try simply drizzling the oil on top of their feed or soaking their grain overnight.

We recommend a daily dose of 1 fl oz once or twice daily with a horse's feed. This dosage is based on a 1000lb horse.

Once your horse becomes comfortable with the taste many customers have found success by increasing dosage until they begin to see their desired results.

Promoting Healthy Weight Gain

Camelina Oil will not result in unwanted weight gain at the recommended daily dose. If you are looking to promote healthy weight gain in your horse we recommend increasing their daily dosage anywhere from 2-4 times overtime.

Warning

  • ❌ Not for use with animals intended for food.
  • ❌ If lameness worsens, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian.
  • ✔️ If in doubt consult a veterinarian prior to using this product.

Success Stories

Karen's Story

I was asked early this spring to try a product called camelina oil I agreed to give it a try. I have a geriatric mare that has been a 3 generation show horse, a 4-H horse a therapeutic riding horse and loved by so many people.

Her health has been slowly deteriorating due to her age. Her condition in April was sad to say the least. Before being put on the oil I had her wormed, then vet checked, overall her muscle mass was deteriorating, she was stiff on her right front shoulder, her skin flaky and coat in a dull unhealthy condition, due to her age and poor teeth condition (floating no longer a option).

I started her on the recommended daily dose and after a week with no real results I doubled the dose along with a daily ration of one gallon rolled oats, one gallon beet pulp & Hoffman’s supplements. She remained on that ration for a month , also on summer pasture. After 2 months there was a noticeable improvement in her stiffness, and condition of hair and skin but no weight gain.

I once again increased the amount of oil with her daily intake and continued till early fall. As of September the mare is showing some weight gain and looking better than she has the last few years. As of November the mare is going out in winter pasture with shelter, hay and water always available and a daily dose of oil with her ration. Overall I believe this horse has showed improvement in her stiffness, her hair and coat, with minimal weight gain.

I truly believe she would have had to be put down this summer if she didn’t improve.

I will continue to feed this product and will be adding it to my young working stock. I have in the past tried different oil products, without visible results. The camelina oil is very palatable and the long shelf life makes it much more cost effective than other oils .

Trish's Thank You

"The results have been amazing and we truly believe in this product, our clients are also putting their horses on the oil after seeing the results!

We have an older gelding retired from a show career but arthritic who was getting monthly leg injections, since starting the oil he moves better and is no longer needing costly injections monthly.

My son's horse who for 12 years would break out in hives from horse flies bites no longer is lumpy and for the first time in this horses life he no longer suffers the reactions of the flies bites not requiring antihistamines or steroids to calm his swollen body.

One clients mare suffering from severe sweet itch is no longer rubbing and biting her body raw since starting the oil. We have a few horses brought in as they were considered problem horses, since starting the oil their history of ulcers and aggressive behavior has changed and they are now pleasures to deal with.

All the horses coats glisten and the manes and tails grow quicker than they ever have before! These are just some of the examples and testimonials since starting our horses on the oil."

Casey's Amazing Turnaround

Casey, a massive Percheron plow horse who stands 18.2 hands high, was in terrible condition when he was rescued by the good folks at Walkabout Farm.

"Casey is the poster child for Camelina," said Jennifer Semach, Founder and Executive Director of Walkabout Farm Therapeutic Riding Association in Minden, Ontario.

The farm is a horse rescue operation but also offers horse therapy for people with a variety of developmental or physical health conditions.

"Casey was 350 pounds underweight with inflamed joints when we got him," said Jennifer. "He was riddled with worms, covered in skin lesions and rain rot with visible open sores from a ploughing harness. All the black spots you see on Casey are scars. The ploughing equipment he was forced to wear rubbed his skin raw and caused substantial soft tissue damage and secondary infections. He was just such a mess. The vet wasn’t confident he’d even recover."

Jennifer said supplementing his feed with Smart Earth Camelina Oil, with its unique ratio of Omega3 to Omega6 in an excellent anti-oxidant background had a substantial impact in bringing Casey back to health. It even helped alleviate Casey's arthritic hocks and inflamed joints.

"I had heard about the benefits of Camelina oil from a friend and decided to try it on Casey right away along with nutritionally balanced food and lots of TLC."

Before long Casey was noticeably moving better and his skin returned to good health: an amazing turnaround in large measure due to the addition of Smart Earth Camelina Oil in his diet.

"Your product quite possibly saved his life," Jennifer said. Today Casey is the talk of the community. "He’s a real crowd pleaser, not many people have seen a horse so big. People are also shocked when they learn that all those black spots are scars where the hair has grown back in black."
